“Learn something new from each person you meet. Everyone knows more than you about something. Ask people what they’ve been rethinking lately, or start a conversation about times you’ve changed your mind in the past year.” – Adam Grant
Adam Grant’s book Think Again The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know is tapping into all we’ve ever learned about the scientific method and opening our minds toward change. Grant challenges us to shift away from preaching, politicking, and prosecuting towards curiosity. “When we become so wrapped up in preaching that we’re right, prosecuting others who are wrong, and politicking for support, we don’t bother to rethink our own views and get trapped in an overconfidence cycle.” To get ourselves out of an overconfidence cycle, we need to think like scientists.” In other words, we need to gather data, test our hypothesis and make informed scientific decisions. In short, let doubt turn you to curiosity.
Grant encourages us to think like George Bernard Shaw…”Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” When was the last time you shifted your opinion, ideas, or perspectives by listening to someone who had a different lens on an idea than you? What did it feel like to let go of your ideas? or embrace someone else’s perspective? Grant believes that these are the moment where we can change ourselves and perhaps even our communities.
I recently met Patti and Milledge Hart. Their new book The Resolutionists is an invitation to “think again”. Patti and Milledge invite us into reframing the way we think about our post career lives. They call it the “unretirement movement”. They are offering a new model for post career. Reading their book is a way to gather data, read about people who have a different lens on retirement, and challenge our own thinking about what we might want post full time career. They don’t preach, politick, or prosecute, they open windows of curiosity by exploring different ways to think about retirement.
Perhaps you’d like to stretch your thinking about your post career life? Or as Grant says..”upgrade your opinion”.
Are you thinking about a transition and not sure how to proceed? Third Half Advisors, a champion of thriving in this chapter of life is inviting you to attend their upcoming Lift Series with Pattie and Milledge Hart . This is an opportunity for you to think like a scientist, listen to others perspectives, assess your own ideas and then perhaps upgrade your thinking on post career.
Come test your ability to change the way you think at the Third Half Advisors Lift Series on April 28 at 5-6pm EST.
Then let us know how you shifted and upgrade your perspective.
