As a dance minor, I spent many a class mastering pivots and pirouettes. I’d “spot” on an object and then quickly turn my head so I could keep the spin going. A slight loss of focus and the pivot and turn was lost and I landed in a swirl of dizziness, wildly out of control. It appears this year is inviting us to spot, pivot and pirouette in new ways to gain control where we can.
The pandemic caused everything to screech to a halt. There have certainly been days that feel wildly out of control. Yet, I have also found that by being clear on my values and strengths I have regained a place to focus and gain control. Renewed clarity on strengths and values has given me the courage to pivot towards new goals.
Imagine focusing on your values and strengths. Keep your eye on them and start slowly looking around, where can you gain some control? Can you see any new opportunities? In these times there are so many things to distract our focus: economy, social justice, social media, politics, and the pandemic. If we chose to pivot and “spot” on our strengths and values we can gain control over these external forces. We can take control on what truly matters most of all.
Try this series of questions to guide you towards a Pandemic Pirouette!
1.SPOT: What is an area you are focusing on right now that feels like you do not have control? What would it take for you to stop focusing on that for 15 minutes and focus on something new?
2. PIVOT: Which of your core values would help you refocus on something new? Think about those values that are outwardly generous.
3. PIROUETTE: Which of your key talents and strengths would help you activate that value to ensure you achieve success and control towards your goal?
Try a few spots, spins, pivots and pirouettes this week. Don’t be discouraged if you get a bit dizzy. Just keep focusing and you will be spinning with control and energy before you know it. Enjoy.
I know my spot, pivot and pirouette has been launching all my training programs on Zoom. It’s official, Polly Chandler Coaching now offers online trainings to teams and individuals.
So whether you hip hop, waltz, ballet, or folk dance…put your values and strength shoes on and start pivoting! You’ve got this. I believe in your dancing potential.
