David Emerald challenges us to think about the roles we play in our relationships. He has built a body of work based on Steven Karpmans Drama Triangle. Emerald guides us to think beyond drama and towards empowerment. His model clarifies the difference between a rescuer and coach. I’ve heard multiple clients mention the joy they experience being a mentor. The question is are they a mentor? a coach? or a rescuer?
Emerald recently shared three foundational beliefs about being a coach or mentor. These beliefs help us to see in an instant the difference between a Coach/Mentor versus a Rescuer. The beliefs are:
Belief #1: “Have faith in the wisdom that lies within each human being. A Coach allows time for the individual’s unique learning process to unfold, while holding them as ultimately whole, complete, and capable to make their own choices.”
