Each year, hundreds of sea lions pull up on the beaches of California to give birth to their pups. The females stay with their pups for about 30 days while the pups grow from 75 to over 300 pounds. After 4-6 weeks, the females return to the sea. The pups must fend for themselves.
Over the last two years there has been an increasing number of starving sea lions on the California beaches. Females abandon their pups because they’ve eaten fish that have eaten an algae that produces Domoic Acid. The females brains are impacted by Domoic Acid which results in starvation and then abandonment of their pups. The malnourished, starving pups then become stranded on beaches. Fortunately, the Marine Mammal Center provides support. Each year thousands of marine mammals are rescued, nourished, given proper care and returned to the sea by a host of volunteers and scientists.
It’s taking a different approach to have sea lions thrive. What are you doing to create the conditions so your Millennial hires will thrive? What can we learn from the Marine Mammal Center about nourishing Millennial hires? Do we need to provide a different level of care, support and nourishment in order for them to stay and thrive?
A recent Gallup report on the millennial generation reveals that 21% of millennials say they’ve changed jobs within the past year, which is more than three times the number of non-millennials who report the same. Gallup estimates that millennial turnover costs the U.S. economy $30.5 billion annually. 60% of millennials say they are open to a new job opportunity. One reason for this is that only 29% say they are engaged in their workplace. How do we get this amazingly talented group to be more engaged and stay at one place of employment longer?
In Millennials in the Workplace Gallup researchers found four conditions for supporting millennials in the workplace. Intentional adoption of these four conditions can help with retention. The four conditions are:
- Provide meaningful feedback by supervisors on a regular basis.
- Provide opportunities for learning and development
- Create conditions for a balance between personal and professional life.
How can you nourish your Millennials to reduce the high turnover rate? How can you provide more meaningful feedback, opportunities for learning and development, and conditions for employee work- life balance?
This may require a slightly different approach. However, there are great Millennials entering the workforce and you are going to want to keep them! Try a little Millennial nourishment and see what happens.
